Understanding why can give collectors a real advantage.

There has never been a better time to collect coins. When I started in the rare coin business, my primary reference was the annual edition of A Guide Book of United States Coins, better known as the Red Book.

The Red Book remains an excellent resource, especially for beginners. However, it represents just a small part of the numismatic knowledge collectors can access today.

We live in the Information Age. New research, books, and online resources like CoinWeek continue to expand our understanding of rare coins. Today, collectors can find specialized references covering nearly every series of U.S. coinage.

How Better Information Changed Coin Collecting

100 Greatest United States Coins by Jeff Garrett

One of the hobby’s most important developments came in 2003, when Anderson Press acquired Whitman Publishing. The Anderson family encouraged an ambitious expansion of numismatic literature.

As a result, Whitman introduced numerous books that helped collectors explore rare coins in greater detail.

My book, 100 Greatest U.S. Coins, is one example. Publications like this helped introduce numismatics to a much wider audience. Major bookstores began carrying titles that once appealed mainly to dedicated collectors.

More recently, CDN Publishing, the company behind the Greysheet, acquired Whitman in October 2023.

The two businesses now operate under the Whitman Brands umbrella. Together, they continue to expand the research and pricing resources available to collectors.

This growing library of knowledge has transformed the hobby. Collectors no longer need decades of experience to find information that once remained largely in the hands of specialists.

Buy the Book Before the Coin

One of numismatics’ most valuable lessons remains remarkably simple: “Buy the book before the coin.”

Coin dealer Aaron Feldman promoted this advice decades ago. Q. David Bowers has also championed the principle throughout his career. I could not agree more.

Of course, today’s collectors can find much of this information online. In fact, buyers can often research a coin’s history, rarity, grading population, and previous auction appearances in minutes.

Even so, having information and understanding it are two very different things.

Before purchasing an expensive coin, take time to study the series and compare available examples. Research often reveals important differences that a price guide or grading label cannot explain.

An educated collector will almost always make better decisions.

Coin Grading Is Essential, but Eye Appeal Still Matters

Most serious collectors of U.S. coins eventually purchase examples that third-party grading services such as NGC have authenticated and graded.

I strongly recommend professional certification, particularly when substantial amounts of money are involved. Independent grading provides greater confidence in a coin’s authenticity and condition.

In fact, the development of third-party grading helped transform the rare coin business over the past four decades. It brought greater consistency to grading and gave buyers more confidence when purchasing expensive coins.

However, a certified grade alone does not guarantee a successful purchase.

Today’s rare coin market places tremendous importance on eye appeal. Two coins with identical numerical grades can look very different. One might display outstanding luster, attractive color, and clean surfaces. Another might lack those qualities despite carrying the same grade.

The difference in desirability can be substantial.

I explore these distinctions in the advanced coin grading class I teach at the American Numismatic Association’s Summer Seminar. Collectors can also find educational videos on related topics at Money.org.

Learning to recognize exceptional quality takes time. Nevertheless, few skills will serve a serious collector better.

Understanding Rare Coin Prices and Price Guides

Collectors have several excellent resources for researching rare coin values.

Among the most widely recognized are the Greysheet publications from CDN Publishing. These resources provide wholesale pricing information, while the company’s CPG guides offer retail valuations.

Many numismatic professionals rely on this information. Furthermore, online pricing tools help collectors follow market developments between printed editions.

This becomes especially important when precious metal prices fluctuate sharply. Gold and silver prices can move quickly, affecting the market for coins with significant bullion value.

NGC also offers extensive online price guides covering U.S. and world coinage. These resources give collectors another useful starting point when researching values.

However, no price guide can capture every detail of the marketplace. Values reflect market information and estimates, not a promise that every coin will sell for a specific amount.

For that reason, I encourage collectors to compare several sources before making an important purchase.

Auction Records Tell an Important Story

Another valuable resource comes from actual auction results.

Most professional numismatists regularly consult auction archives to understand what buyers have paid for comparable coins. I rely heavily on this information in my own business.

However, auction records can confuse collectors who focus only on the final price.

As I mentioned earlier, not every coin with the same grade offers the same quality. Therefore, collectors should examine auction photographs rather than compare numbers alone.

For example, a coin with below-average eye appeal might sell for substantially less than its published guide value. Conversely, an exceptional example might attract aggressive bidding and achieve a surprising premium.

Some coins even display enough quality to make experienced collectors consider whether they might qualify for a higher grade.

Naturally, these coins can bring extraordinary prices.

The key is understanding what buyers actually purchased. A remarkable auction result for one exceptional coin does not automatically establish the value of every example with the same grade.

Auction prices provide important evidence. However, collectors must learn to interpret that evidence correctly.

Nothing Replaces Examining Rare Coins in Person

One of my strongest recommendations is to examine lots before major coin auctions whenever possible.

These previews offer a remarkable educational opportunity. Collectors can study millions of dollars’ worth of rare coins, often including examples they might never have another chance to examine closely.

More importantly, they can compare multiple coins within the same numerical grade.

Visitors to the World’s Fair of Money had the opportunity to view the Tyrants of the Golden Horn exhibit.

This experience teaches lessons that photographs and price guides cannot fully convey. You begin to recognize differences in strike, luster, surface quality, originality, and eye appeal.

After the auction, review the prices realized. Then compare those results with your own observations.

The relationship between quality and price often becomes much clearer.

After more than 50 years in the rare coin business, I still examine lots at major auctions for exactly these reasons. The knowledge I gain remains invaluable.

Learn Your Series and Find a Trusted Mentor

Many collectors eventually concentrate on a particular series of U.S. coinage. If you follow that path, I strongly encourage you to learn everything possible about your chosen specialty.

Study the coins’ history, production methods, original mintages, and surviving populations. In addition, explore the varieties and other characteristics that make the series interesting.

After all, coin collecting involves much more than filling empty spaces in an album.

A deep understanding of your specialty can help you identify better examples and recognize opportunities that less-informed buyers might overlook.

Finding a trusted mentor can also make an enormous difference.

Experienced collectors and dealers often have access to coins and market information that newer collectors cannot easily obtain. More importantly, a knowledgeable mentor can offer valuable guidance about quality, pricing, and long-term collecting goals.

These relationships often pay dividends for many years.

Rarity, Availability, and the Price You Pay

Rarity and availability play major roles in determining rare coin prices.

For example, collectors can often purchase common-date U.S. gold or silver coins in circulated condition for relatively modest premiums over their precious metal value.

In these situations, comparison shopping can help buyers find competitive prices.

However, the equation changes as coins become scarcer.

Truly rare coins may appear on the market only occasionally. Furthermore, exceptional quality can make an already scarce issue even harder to locate.

As a result, price guides become less precise when dealing with coins that rarely change hands.

Suppose you discover an extremely rare coin that perfectly suits your collection. The asking price may seem unusually high compared with published estimates.

Before dismissing the opportunity, consider how long you might wait for another example.

You could spend years searching for a comparable coin.

Price guides remain useful, but they are only guides. Actual market prices depend on rarity, quality, demand, and availability.

Understanding these factors can help collectors make better decisions.

The Growing Challenge of Misinformation and Artificial Intelligence

Today’s collectors enjoy extraordinary access to information. Unfortunately, that same technology also makes it easier for misinformation to spread.

This concerns me, especially as artificial intelligence becomes more common in the rare coin business.

Some companies now use AI to generate coin listings rather than rely entirely on experienced numismatists. These descriptions may sound convincing, but they can contain mistakes or repeat inaccurate information.

Collectors need to approach unfamiliar claims with caution.

Check important facts against reliable numismatic references. Review actual auction records, examine coins carefully, and seek advice from knowledgeable professionals.

Most importantly, consider the source before trusting information that might influence an expensive purchase.

Technology has made coin collecting more accessible than ever. However, it cannot replace experience, sound judgment, or a genuine understanding of the coins themselves.

After five decades in this business, I remain convinced that education offers collectors their greatest advantage.

The more you learn, the better your chances of long-term success, and the more rewarding your collecting experience becomes.

Have a coin question or a numismatic topic you would like me to explore?
