Chevy Chase has revealed that he spent eight days in a coma due to heart failure during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
The comedy legend has opened up about the health emergency in his new documentary I\u2019m Chevy Chase And You\u2019re Not<\/i>, which\u00a0premieres on CNN on Thursday (January 1).<\/p>\n
The severity of his hospitalisation had not previously been known, but Chase\u2019 daughter Caley reveals in the doc that her father \u201cbasically came back from the dead\u201d(via Billboard<\/i><\/a>).<\/p>\n She recalls the warning the family received from doctors, who told them: \u201cWe might not get him back. We don\u2019t know how present he\u2019ll be. Prepare yourselves for the worst\u201d. When he finally did regain consciousness, Caley said, \u201call he could do was use his voice\u201d.<\/p>\n\n Chase\u2019s wife Jayni also recounts her memory of the event. \u201cSomething was wrong,\u201d she recalls. \u201cAnd he\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0explain to me what was wrong. So, we went to\u00a0ER. His heart stops.\u201d<\/p>\n The star of\u00a0Saturday Night Live<\/i><\/a>,\u00a0Caddyshack\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0National Lampoon\u2019s Vacation\u00a0<\/i>was placed in a medically induced coma for a total of eight days and remained in hospital for five weeks, and he has said the trauma has left him with persistent memory gaps.<\/p>\n Elsewhere in the doc, he reveals that he was hurt by not being invited to the SNL <\/i>50th anniversary\u00a0celebrations\u00a0earlier this year. \u201cIt was kind of upsetting,\u201d he said. \u201cI expected that I would\u2019ve been on the stage too with all the other actors.\u201d<\/p>\n Chase\u2019s reputation for being blunt with his colleagues and co-stars is well established, and last year the director of\u00a0Saturday Night<\/i>, the behind-the-scenes drama about the first ever SNL\u00a0<\/i>episode,\u00a0revealed that Chase told him he \u201cshould be embarrassed\u201d by the film<\/a>.<\/p>\n He also described\u00a0Community<\/i><\/a>, on which he starred for four seasons,\u00a0as \u201cnot funny enough\u201d in 2023<\/a>,\u00a0while a\u00a0year\u00a0earlier\u00a0he said he \u201cdoesn\u2019t care\u201d\u00a0about his reputation<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cI am who I am,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I like where\u2026 who I am.
