Don Bryant, the veteran Memphis Soul musician and songwriter, has died at the age of 83.<\/p>\n

The news was shared by his family on Instagram on Friday (December 26), who wrote: \u201cDon loved sharing his music and songs with all of you and it gave him such great joy to perform and record new music.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was so appreciative of everyone who was part of his musical journey and who supported him along the way,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n

He is best remembered for his work alongside Ann Peebles, co-writing her timeless 1973 hit \u2018I Can\u2019t Stand\u00a0The\u00a0Rain\u2019, among other tracks\u00a0such as \u2018I\u2019m\u00a0Gonna\u00a0Tear Your Playhouse Down\u2019 and \u2018Until You Came\u00a0Into\u00a0My Life\u2019. Bryant and Peebles\u00a0also\u00a0married in 1974.<\/p>\n

Born in Memphis on 16 March 1942, he was immersed in gospel music from\u00a0a young age, before entering the music industry in the \u201860s. He quickly became associated with Hi Records in the city, a label run by Willie Mitchell.<\/p>\n

Bryant was\u00a0closely associated\u00a0with the smooth, restrained sound of the label, conveying deeply felt emotional detail with\u00a0an\u00a0understated, bittersweet\u00a0touch, in contrast to the harder sound of Memphis\u2019 other major label at the time, Stax Records.<\/p>\n

Although better known as a writer, he did release music under his own name, beginning with 1969 album \u2018Precious Soul\u2019, but it was the work he did creating tracks for the likes of\u00a0Etta James<\/a>,\u00a0Solomon\u00a0Burke<\/a>\u00a0and Albert King for which he made the most impact.<\/p>\n

Bryant and Peebles remained together, and it was only when the latter withdrew from music after suffering a stroke in 2012 that Bryant decided to return to the stage. He released two further solo records, \u2018Don\u2019t Give Up\u2019 in 2017 and \u2018You Make Me Feel\u2019 in 2020, to critical acclaim.<\/p>\n

\u2018I Can\u2019t Stand\u00a0The\u00a0Rain\u2019 peaked at Number 38 on the American charts and was once named as \u201cthe best song ever\u201d by\u00a0John Lennon<\/a>. It was also sampled by\u00a0Missy Elliott<\/a>\u00a0for her 1997 single \u2018The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)\u2019.<\/p>\n
