New details have emerged about the deaths of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, while their children have announced a memorial service.<\/p>\n
The 78-year-old filmmaker and his wife, the 70-year-old photographer Michele Singer-Reiner, were found murdered in their home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles<\/a> on December 14.<\/p>\n A day later,\u00a0the couple\u2019s 32-year-old son Nick Reiner was arrested in connection with their deaths<\/a>,\u00a0and\u00a0he has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder with \u201cspecial circumstances\u201d<\/a>. His charges could carry a life sentence or the death penalty under California law.<\/p>\n The couple\u2019s death certificates have now been released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, and obtained by TMZ<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n They record that Rob Reiner\u2019s body was found at 15:45, and Singer Reiner\u2019s at 15:46. The cause of death for both is given as \u201cmultiple sharp force injuries\u201d with the circumstances described as \u201chomicide\u201d and \u201cwith knife, by another\u201d.<\/p>\n The interval between the onset of the attack and death is given as \u201cminutes\u201d, while the time and date of death is recorded as \u201cunknown\u201d.<\/p>\n Under \u201ctype of disposition\u201d the certificate records \u201ccremate\/residence\u201d, but there is no confirmation that cremation has been carried out.<\/p>\n Two of the Reiners\u2019 children released a new statement yesterday (December 23) saying that a memorial service is being planned. \u201cJake and Romy Reiner remain grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received. They will share information about a memorial service honouring their parents at a later date.\u201d<\/p>\n Nick Reiner appeared in court on 17 December but did not enter a plea. He is due to return to court for an arraignment hearing on 7 January.<\/p>\n Reiner was known for helming Hollywood classics such as Stand\u00a0By\u00a0Me\u00a0<\/i>(1986),\u00a0The Princess Bride<\/i>\u00a0(1987),\u00a0When Harry Met Sally\u00a0<\/i>(1989),\u00a0Misery\u00a0<\/i>(1990)\u00a0and\u00a0A Few Good Men<\/i>\u00a0(1992).<\/p>\n 1984\u2019s\u00a0This Is Spinal Tap\u00a0<\/i>was Reiner\u2019s directorial debut, with Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer playing the members of the fictional English heavy metal band Spinal Tap and Reiner himself playing Marty Di Bergi, the \u201cdocumentarian\u201d making a film about their attempted comeback.<\/p>\n The sequel,\u00a0Spinal Tap II: The End<\/i><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>Continues<\/i><\/a>, was released as Reiner\u2019s last film earlier this year.\u00a0Paul McCartney<\/a>\u00a0had a cameo in it, and this week,\u00a0the Beatle paid his own tribute to Reiner<\/a>, writing: \u201cLife can be so\u00a0unfair\u00a0and this tragedy proves it\u201d.<\/p>\n Since news broke of their deaths, countless other tributes have poured in for Rob and Michele Reiner, including from Stephen King<\/a>, who\u00a0said that he was \u201chorrified and saddened\u201d by the news<\/a>, and described the director as a \u201cwonderful friend, political ally, and brilliant filmmaker\u201d.<\/p>\n Yo La Tengo<\/a>\u00a0also\u00a0paid tribute to Reiner with a cover of \u2018Gimme Some Money\u2019<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0This Is Spinal Tap<\/em>\u00a0at their Hanukkah show on Monday. Vocalist Ira Kaplan told the crowd at New York City\u2019s Bowery Ballroom: \u201cBecause we\u2019re gonna salute a Jewish songwriter we were not expecting to be saluting this Hanukkah, and we certainly weren\u2019t expecting to be memorialising him.
