As well as the two sequels, it also spawned the prequel\u00a0<i>The Scorpion King<\/i>, one of the first lead roles for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/dwayne-johnson\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dwayne Johnson<\/a>, in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Universal attempted to rejuvenate the franchise with a 2017 reboot starring\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/tom-cruise\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Cruise<\/a> as a US soldier who accidentally unearthed the ancient tomb of an Egyptian princess (Sofia Boutella). That film was critically panned and lost money, despite grossing over $400million worldwide, and the intended spinoff universe was abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>As well as the\u00a0rumoured\u00a0new Fraser and Weisz film, there is also a separate\u00a0<i>Mummy\u00a0<\/i>film in production by horror studio Blumhouse Productions, set to star Jack Reynor (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/films\/midsommar\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Midsommar<\/i><\/a>, <i>Sing Street<\/i>)\u00a0and\u00a0directed by Lee Cronin (<i>The Hole\u00a0In\u00a0The\u00a0Ground<\/i>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/films\/evil-dead-rise\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Evil Dead Rise<\/i><\/a>). It will be the first film in the\u00a0<i>Mummy\u00a0<\/i>franchise not to be produced by Universal or Hammer and it is set to be released in April 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Fraser\u2019s career was\u00a0revitalised\u00a0by his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/film\/brendan-fraser-wins-best-actor-oscars-2023-3412305#:~:text=Brendan%20Fraser%20won%20his%20first,nominations%20going%20into%20the%20show.&amp;text=Fraser%20was%20named%20Best%20Actor,as%20Charlie%20in%20The%20Whale.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oscar-winning turn<\/a>\u00a0in Darren Aronofsky\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/film-reviews\/the-whale-review-brendan-fraser-3326777\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The Whale<\/i><\/a><i>\u00a0<\/i>in 2022, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/film\/brendan-fraser-to-play-dwight-eisenhower-in-d-day-film-pressure-3777968\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he is set to play President Dwight D.
