Comedian Katherine Ryan<\/a> is setting the record straight over comments she made about Meghan Markle<\/a>\u00a0and her divisive Netflix<\/a> series.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the latest episode of Katherine\u2019s podcast Telling Everybody Everything, the Canadian comic discussed\u00a0With Love, Meghan<\/a>, which has already been widely derided by critics<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following this, her comments were picked up by many news organisations, with the Daily Mail<\/a>\u2019s headline reading: \u201cKatherine Ryan claims people are \u2018hate-watching\u2019 Meghan Markle\u2019s \u2018beige\u2019 Netflix series – and calls on Duchess to \u2018come clean about Sussex surname\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMeghan Markle suffers fresh blow as defender Katherine Ryan accuses her of \u2018lying\u2019,\u201d read the Express<\/a>\u2019 take on Katherine\u2019s review of the show, while the New York Post<\/a> claimed: \u201cMeghan Markle\u2019s former ally claims she lied about not knowing Prince Harry: \u2018Manicured and very forced\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In light of this, Katherine shared a clip of her actual remarks on Instagram, writing: \u201c<\/span>My libertarian husband tells me my comments about Meghan Sussex on this week\u2019s podcast have been weaponised in tabloids and also on Elon Musk\u2019s website.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHere\u2019s a better overview of what I actually said which I think is more balanced than what has been presented.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She then insisted: \u201cI like her. I don\u2019t like the cooking show. I just think maybe the girl needs a new manager.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the accompanying clip from her podcast, Katherine declared: \u201cI liked Meghan Markle. I was rooting for Meghan Markle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Reflecting on the Duchess of Sussex\u2019s past claims about her experiences as a senior member of the Royal Family<\/a>, Katherine continued: \u201cNot all racism looks the way you think it\u2019s going to look. There is an unconscious bias in [the UK] and in most countries, really, that a lot of people don\u2019t even realise that they have.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think what feels gaslighting for someone like Meghan Markle\u2026 when she says, \u2019I feel that I was victimised by institutionalised racism,\u2032 then you have to believe her! That is her experience, and it\u2019s really weird for white people to be like, \u2018no you weren\u2019t, we\u2019re not racist, we just don\u2019t like you\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She added: \u201cTo be someone with a mother who is Black, entering the Royal Family, I\u2019m sure they had some feelings about that. Because that\u2019s the Royal Family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Turning her attention to With Love, Meghan, Katherine then said: \u201cIn addition to that, though, she is very Hollywood. I see [that] now. Maybe it\u2019s just the projects she\u2019s choosing, [but] it does feel like she has lied about whether she knew who Prince Harry was and these details about her childhood change.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHer whole act just seems very manicured and very forced. I\u2019ve known a lot of Hollywood people. They\u2019re not bad people. I certainly don\u2019t think she\u2019s a bad person. But I think, you know, she likes cosying up to celebrities and she wants the [big-money Netflix] deal \u2013 like anyone would, and she likes the fact that she\u2019s married to a prince. Like, of course.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut I would rather someone lean into that and be like, \u2018oh my god \u2013 I used to be on Suits and now I\u2019m married to a fucking prince!\u2019. I would rather that than this act of like, \u2018I\u2019m just so humble\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Katherine then claimed: \u201cSo, Netflix continues to try to make Meghan Sussex, formerly Meghan Markle \u2013 and technically Meghan Mountbatten \u2013 happen with her latest peek behind the royal-adjacent curtain titled With Love, Meghan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are hate-watching it, though,\u201d she suggested. \u201cPeople are tuned in, whether they love something or hate something, whatever keeps them watching more episodes. And they\u2019re posting loads about it online.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf this was Netflix\u2019s intention, to be, like, \u2018let\u2019s throw Meghan under the bus\u2019\u00a0 where even the people who really liked her are sort of turning\u2026 not against her\u2026 but this is just\u2026 she just doesn\u2019t seem to be the kind of gal that I would want to be friends with. It\u2019s too beige.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this clip that\u2019s going round where Mindy Kaling is in her kitchen, and Mindy Kaling is like, \u2019who would have thought that Meghan Markle eats at Jack In The Box, and she\u2019s like, \u2018you know I am Sussex now, my last name is Sussex, and it feels so wonderful to have the same last name as the Royal Family, I mean, my children\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether or not Katherine is right about people \u201chate-watching\u201d the show, the famously-discerning team at Netflix has already made a decision about its future<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
